The United Kingdom is one of Europe’s two largest data center markets alongside Germany, with London and the Slough corridor forming part of the FLAP-D group of hubs. Demand from cloud and AI services continues to drive new projects, increasingly outside the congested London area.
The government has designated AI Growth Zones, which offer priority for grid connections, support for private grid infrastructure, discounted electricity costs and accelerated planning, along with up to £5 million per zone for local initiatives. On the grid side, demand connection requests grew from 41 GW to 125 GW in under a year, up to 100 GW attributed to data centres, and a demand connections reform now aims to prioritize the most advanced projects and encourage phased, non-firm and flexible connections.
