Denmark has become one of Europe’s most sought-after data center locations, combining clean and low-cost power, low-latency connectivity and a developed district heating system that can absorb waste heat. Several hyperscalers operate large campuses in the country, and its attractiveness for investment is well established.
That demand has put the grid under strain. Around 60 GW of new consumption projects are waiting for connection, roughly nine times the country’s 7 GW peak demand, which led the transmission operator Energinet to temporarily pause new connections. An emergency law, expected to take effect in October 2026, splits connection requests into four priority categories with data centers placed last; projects in the lower categories are ranked on grid-friendliness and assessed in batches, and data centers can be refused when grid capacity is short.
